Venetian art: museums and masterpieces
The Doge’s Palace, St Mark’s, San Rocco, the Frari and the Accademia: Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese.
Venice is not just a city of canals. It is a vast open-air museum and a treasure house of world art. Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese, Bellini, Tiepolo: their works tell the story of the city better than any textbook.
On my museum tours I won’t just name artists and dates. We’ll read the art together: decode symbols, look for intriguing details, compare painters and uncover the personal stories behind every masterpiece.
What you can choose
- Doge’s Palace. Halls where the fates of states were decided, canvases by Tintoretto and Veronese, and a world of secret councils, spies, courts and prisons. We’ll find out why the doge was not an absolute ruler, cross the Bridge of Sighs and recall Casanova’s escape.
- St Mark’s Basilica. Byzantine splendour, golden mosaics, the Pala d’Oro and trophies from Constantinople. You’ll find out why this basilica looks more like an Eastern palace than an Italian church.
- Scuola Grande di San Rocco. The Sistine Chapel of Venice. We’ll talk about the rivalry between artists and how Jacopo Tintoretto turned an entire building into a masterpiece.
- Frari Basilica. One of the grandest Gothic churches in the city, with Titian’s famous “Assunta”, which changed ideas about Venetian painting, and the monuments to Titian and Canova.
- Gallerie dell’Accademia. Venetian painting from the 14th to the 18th century: Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese. We’ll talk about colour, light and perspective, and how artists captured the beauty and wealth of the city.
The length depends on the museum and the programme you choose, usually 1.5–2 hours per site. Museums can be combined with each other or with a walk around the city.

Voices of Italy
I was born a Venetian on the 18th of October 1775, the day of the evangelist Saint Luke, and by the grace of God I shall die an Italian, whenever that Providence which mysteriously governs the world so wills.
Io nacqui veneziano ai 18 ottobre del 1775, giorno dell’evangelista san Luca; e morrò per la grazia di Dio italiano quando lo vorrà quella Provvidenza che governa misteriosamente il mondo.
