Lagoon islands: Murano, Burano, Torcello
Three islands, three different worlds: Murano glass, Burano’s colourful houses and the quiet of Torcello.
Venice is not just a historic centre with palaces and canals. It is a whole lagoon with dozens of islands, each with its own history, traditions and special character.
Join me on a journey across the waters of the Venetian Lagoon to three famous islands: Murano, Burano and Torcello.
What we’ll see
- Murano, the island of fire and glass. Famous Murano glass has been born here for over seven centuries. We’ll talk about the secrets of the glassblowers, the masters who were once forbidden to leave the island, and how Venice guarded its monopoly. If you wish, we’ll visit a workshop and watch red-hot molten glass become a work of art.
- Burano, the island of colour and lace. Colourful houses, canals, little boats and flowers in the windows. Why are the houses painted so brightly? Did fishermen really paint them so they could find their homes in the fog? And why was Burano lace once valued as highly as jewels?
- Torcello. The quietest of the three islands, where Venice began.
Each island tells a completely different story of Venice: of craftsmanship and trade, fishing traditions, art, faith and the birth of the city. Here we won’t just take wonderful photos, we’ll also get to know the local traditions.
The tour lasts about 4–6 hours, depending on the number of islands and the travel time.
Leave bustling Venice behind for a few hours and discover a completely different side of it!
